Chapter Ten
âThe best way out is always through.â
Robert Frost (American poet 1874â1963)
When Jorge pulled up to the entrance to the rental car company, Van turned to him. âI think I changed my mind. I want to go to the train station. Iâm a little concerned about being followed. I have no idea who shot at me and if I rent a car and am alone, that could be trouble. We donât even know if weâve been followed from Dusseldorf to here. I think itâd be better to get to a crowded train. Safer.â
âGood idea. I knew you were smart. I just didnât know how smart. Keeping in a crowd is good.â
âThanks.â She thought for a second. âCan we pop by a drugstore? I think I need to color my hair again. Maybe thatâll help me get away from whoever is following me.â
âAnother great idea. But where will you do it?â
âIn the lavatory of the train of course.â
Jorge laughed. âItâs going to be funny if some passenger wants to use the facilities and finds you with goop in your hair.â
âIâll have to take that chance.â She grinned at the picture he painted of this imagined train passenger.
He put the car in gear, drove on and stopped a couple blocks away at a store. He waited at the curb while she ran in and grabbed a box of hair color.
When they got to the train station, she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. âIâll never forget you. You saved my life last night. Iâm sure of it.â
âIâm not so sure. I think if whoever it was wanted you dead, youâd be dead.â
âWhy? What makes you think that?â She turned to face him.
âHans recovered the bullet from the wall. It was hollow point. I donât think whoever wanted to scare you would send someone that had an unsteady shooting hand with that kind of ammo. The shot was definitely meant to scare you, not kill you. Make you cower in fear. Give them a chance to grab you. Question you. Whoever it was wouldâve probably just interrogated you and let you go if you hadnât called me.â
âYou really think that? Iâm not so sure. If it was the Interpol man I know, yes. Iâd agree with you. But if it was someone else, I donât agree. Iâm thinking it wasnât the Interpol man. At least, I want to think it wasnât. So, if Iâm right, I think whoever it was wouldâve killed me. After they had the information I could give them. Whatever that may be.â She shrugged.
âMaybe, yes. Maybe, no. But since we donât know, thatâs why a crowd is good. Stay in the public cars of the train as much as you can. Donât buy a sleeper. I donât know where youâre going but if youâre on an overnight train, sit in the club car. All night. Promise me this.â
âI will.â She shook his hand and got out of the car.
As she walked toward the station, he rolled down the passenger window and yelled, âFraulein Fleet.
