Chapter Ten

“The best way out is always through.”

Robert Frost (American poet 1874–1963)

When Jorge pulled up to the entrance to the rental car company, Van turned to him. “I think I changed my mind. I want to go to the train station. I’m a little concerned about being followed. I have no idea who shot at me and if I rent a car and am alone, that could be trouble. We don’t even know if we’ve been followed from Dusseldorf to here. I think it’d be better to get to a crowded train. Safer.”

“Good idea. I knew you were smart. I just didn’t know how smart. Keeping in a crowd is good.”

“Thanks.” She thought for a second. “Can we pop by a drugstore? I think I need to color my hair again. Maybe that’ll help me get away from whoever is following me.”

“Another great idea. But where will you do it?”

“In the lavatory of the train of course.”

Jorge laughed. “It’s going to be funny if some passenger wants to use the facilities and finds you with goop in your hair.”

“I’ll have to take that chance.” She grinned at the picture he painted of this imagined train passenger.

He put the car in gear, drove on and stopped a couple blocks away at a store. He waited at the curb while she ran in and grabbed a box of hair color.

When they got to the train station, she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. “I’ll never forget you. You saved my life last night. I’m sure of it.”

“I’m not so sure. I think if whoever it was wanted you dead, you’d be dead.”

“Why? What makes you think that?” She turned to face him.

“Hans recovered the bullet from the wall. It was hollow point. I don’t think whoever wanted to scare you would send someone that had an unsteady shooting hand with that kind of ammo. The shot was definitely meant to scare you, not kill you. Make you cower in fear. Give them a chance to grab you. Question you. Whoever it was would’ve probably just interrogated you and let you go if you hadn’t called me.”

“You really think that? I’m not so sure. If it was the Interpol man I know, yes. I’d agree with you. But if it was someone else, I don’t agree. I’m thinking it wasn’t the Interpol man. At least, I want to think it wasn’t. So, if I’m right, I think whoever it was would’ve killed me. After they had the information I could give them. Whatever that may be.” She shrugged.

“Maybe, yes. Maybe, no. But since we don’t know, that’s why a crowd is good. Stay in the public cars of the train as much as you can. Don’t buy a sleeper. I don’t know where you’re going but if you’re on an overnight train, sit in the club car. All night. Promise me this.”

“I will.” She shook his hand and got out of the car.

As she walked toward the station, he rolled down the passenger window and yelled, “Fraulein Fleet.
